CJSA School Curriculum

 

This curriculum was developed by the Sikh Research Institute. 

(NOTE: We plan on starting this curriculum on March 4, 2007)

 

Boli Curriculum (Language Arts) 

 

B0: Boli 0

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Recognize all of the Gurmukhi alphabet and three vowel symbols

  • Write at least 75% of the alphabet

  • Respond with the given word learnt for the specific alphabet 75% of the time

  • Recognize and are able to identify 50% of the vocabulary taught

B1: Boli 1

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Recognize all of the Gurmukhi alphabet and all 10 vowel symbols

  • Write all of the alphabet and all 10 vowel symbols legibly

  • Use developed vocabulary appropriately 75% of the time

  • Recite Mul Mantr from memorization

  • Identify rhyming words in a given passage

B2: Boli 2

At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify nouns and verbs in a sentence

  • Develop sentences

  • Ask questions based on a given sentence of a short passage

  • Understand a short passage

  • Write short passages similar to one read for comprehension

  • Orally present 5-8 sentences about themselves

  • Recite Sohila with help of a Pothi

B3: Boli 3

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Recite the first 15 pauris of the Jap Ji Sahib with the help of Pothi

  • Use a dictionary to find an unfamiliar word with success 75% of the time

  • Conjugate common words with ease 75% of the time

  • Verbalize multi-step instructions with the help of a self-written passage

  • Follow multi-step instruction up to 90% of completion

  • Write a paragraph with a topic sentence and 2-4 supporting details

B4: Boli 4

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Recite the final 23 pauris of the Jap Ji Sahib with the help of a Pothi

  • Make an accurate hypothesis about text and provide supporting evidence

  • Identify nouns, verbs, and prepositions when given a sentence or passage

  • Successfully write a multi-paragraph informal letter

  • Identify what a metaphor is in Punjabi and provide supporting material

  • Follow 5-6 multi-step directions

  • Understand the purpose of Mahan Kosh 

B5: Boli 5

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Write a multi-paragraph passage with a central idea

  • Discuss their views on a controversial issue and successfully complete a persuasion passage

  • Recite Rahiras with the help of a Pothi and will memorize 50% of entire Rahiras

  • Write an opinion letter to Babar after understanding Guru Nanak Dev Ji's bani and reading appropriate passage on Babar's barbarity

  • Identify 3-4 aesthetic forms of Gurbani

  • Write a multi-paragraph composition on themes in Guru Nanak Dev Ji's bani with at least 3-5 supporting references 


 

Virsa Curriculum (Sikh Heritage)

 

V0: Virsa 0

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Recite the Sikh Pledge with the help of the teacher or peers 100% of the time

  • Identify all Sikh symbols learnt and incorporated into their "My Little Sikhi Book"

  • Accurately describe 3-4 Sikh symbols: Khanda, Ik Onkar, Nishan Sahib, and Hawk

  • Verbalize and model proper Gurudwara behavior

  • Recite the Khalsa Anthem with the help of the teacher or peers 75% of the time

  • Verbalize the significance of at least one Sikh celebration

V1: Virsa 1

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Identify the names of the Ten Gurus with the help of a teacher

  • Explain the role sangat plays in day to day life

  • Recite the Sikh Pledge without the help of teachers or peers

  • Recite the Khalsa Anthem

  • Highlight 2-3 responsibilities of the Citizens of the Khalsa

  • Identify on a given map of Southeast Asia the general location of Punjab

  • Verbalize an example of one Sikh woman in history

V2: Virsa 2

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Verbalize that they are members of the Sikh Family at large

  • Identify at least 10 of the 17 districts of East Punjab

  • Identify at least 3 of the 5 rivers of Punjab

  • Be able to say the name of the 10 Gurus without the help of a teacher

  • Recall at least one event from the life of each of the 10 Gurus

  • Be able to say the name of at least two of the Sahibzade

  • Verbalize the importance of string instruments and recognize 3-5 instruments

  • Identify that Kirtan began with Guru Nanak Dev Ji as a Sikh tradition

V3: Virsa 3

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Recall 2-3 folk tales of Punjab

  • Verbalize the importance of Karah Parshad

  • Recognize the ingredients and preparation of Karah Parshad

  • Successfully identify Phulkari as a tradition of Punjab

  • Identify biases and mental vices existing in the community

  • Name the Panj Piare

  • Identify at least 2-3 Sikh women in history

V4: Virsa 4

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Successfully identify the definition of a Sikh according to the Rahit Mariada

  • Identify up to two beliefs of other religions which were discussed in class and be able to compare and contrast these with Sikh beliefs

  • Successfully highlight Banda Singh Bahadar's leadership by supporting it with events of his life

  • Name the Panj Vikar and identify 2--3 strategies to combat it

  • Verbalize the history of Kirtan and the importance of Gurmat Sangat

  • Identify 4-5 Shastars used in Gatka

  • Verbalize 1-2 Gatka movements

V5: Virsa 5

At the completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  • Identify factors prevalent in society during and prior to Guru Nanak Dev Ji

  • Highlight Guru Nanak Dev Ji's message by providing evidence of his life events

  • Identify, through examples, that the though and message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Arjan Dev Ji were the same

  • Show leadership skills by planning, leading, and implementing celebration ideas throughout the term


Gurbani and Kirtan Curriculum

G1: Gurbani - Level 1

In this course, students learn how to accurately recite the banis used commonly in the Diwan.  We hope that this will increase the children involvement in the Diwan.

 

G2: Gurbani - Level 2

In this course, students will go in-depth with the meaning of the Sikh Banis and Ardaas.

 

K1: Kirtan - Level 1 

In this class, students learn to sing selected shabads.  Students will not learn how to play instruments in this class. 

 

K2: Kirtan - Level 2 

This class gives students an opportunity to learn how to play instruments used in kirtan.  The class is conducted by members of Ragi Jatha.  Classses are generally held after langar on Sundays.  Participation in this course requires a separate registration and fee.
